Bontanical Name: Styrax benzoin
Plant/Part: Tree/gum.
Country of Origin: Indonesia (Java, Sumatra), and Thailand.
Extraction: Solvent extraction.
Colour: Thick and dark golden brown.
Aroma: Sweet, with vanilla essence overtones.
History/Myth: Gained wide recognition as an ingredient of "Friar's Balsam", a traditional treatment for clearing air passages.
Caution: May make you drowsy if taken in large doses.
Wellbeing: Helps to soothe and comfort in periods of stress and anxiety.
Body: Helps ease muscular aches and pains. Improves circulation to hands and feet. May offer temporary relief from arthritic pain. Useful for relieving symptoms associated with colds and flu. Offers relief for stomach cramps and flatulence.
Skin: A moisturiser for dry skin, whether aged, hardened or stretched. Particularly helpful for chapped hands or heels.
Blends well with: Bergamot, cypress, geranium, lavender, peppermint, rose, sandalwood, ylang ylang. (Often used as part of a blend.)
